She had his hand crushed tightly in a death grip, like the hold of a python strangling its helpless prey. And although he possessed a high pain tolerance, he found that this may be the day he would be pushed to his limits. Evey’s flushed cheeks conveyed signs of tears, some of which she was still crying.  Every once in a while, V gently wiped them away with a hanker chief.  With the hand that wasn’t practically breaking every bone in her lover’s own; she tightly gripped the white sheets with every wracking pain that came and went. This had been going on since one in the morning, why wasn’t it over with yet!?

V himself was wondering the exact same thing.  The torturing sounds of his wife’s screams every time a particularly rough contraction struck reminded him of… Things he decided wouldn’t be best to reminisce on at this time. It had all started happening at exactly one in the morning, when the contractions simply felt like what Evey described as menstrual pains, though a bit sharper than a cramp like that would be. Ten minutes later, she described them as being stabbed with one of V’s recently sharpened knives. It had been at that point the two had realized what was happening.

Ever since they had discovered the fact that Evey was pregnant, V had taken the liberty of preparing for their child’s birth. Obviously, Evey could technically have been taken to a hospital, though V would have been unable to join her. While he had attempted to convince her that was the better option in terms of her health and a safe arrival for the unborn infant, Evey refused it. She refused for the father of her child not to be present when he or she was born.

It soon became apparent there was no use in arguing with his beloved, and V immediately went to work. With books that Evey had given for him to study, he found himself spending countless hours in the library, re-reading the books multiple times. He indulged himself in the knowledge of pregnancy and birth they provided, mentally preparing himself for the upcoming date. One book in particular gave off information about the supplies for a proper homebirth.

He had made absolutely certain that he was informed on each and every possibility that could occur during labor, as well as the different means of birth. He had imbedded into his mind how to perform a C-Section, the proper method of reaction during a breech birth, anything and everything that could go wrong, he had made certain to study them.

And yet even so, V was certain that he had never been more terrified in all his life- at least from what he could remember of it. The reason being was that all of those other times when most folks would have been terrified, V was not, for he felt there was something he could do about the situation at hand.

But this?

He had no control over anything whatsoever. He couldn’t stop the intense pain his lover was experiencing. They had tried liquid and pill pain remedies, but both options failed miserably. V obviously didn’t have an epidural to his name; he had never pictured actually needing one.  For one thing, he had never pictured himself with a wife of any kind, much less a pregnant one. And he was a man; there was no reason to ever need one for himself. There was nothing he could do to persuade the stubborn infant into coming out any faster than it was, and he could tell that Evey was equally as impatient as he was. Not only did he wish for her to be rid of the agony that plagued her body, but he desperately wanted to meet their child. He wanted to see the product of what his wife had been put through for nine long months, what they had made together.

V somehow noticed that the grip Evey had on his hand was noticeably tighter than it had been a moment ago, and she managed to choke out, “V-V…” she briefly lifted her free hand to gesture to her sheet covered legs, “… Check… Check it…!” her sentence escalated to a quiet sob after that, and her hand went back to gripping the white fabric.

The masked man responded with a light nod, giving the hand he was holding a gentle squeeze. Sweet relief flooded throughout his arm as she released his appendage, and he quickly made his way over to the foot of their bed. V carefully lifted the end of the sheet up in order to examine if Evey was yet to be fully dilated

It took only a few seconds for V to bring his head up to face her. “I believe you’re ready dear...” he said. The woman let out a sigh of relief, only to find herself gritting her teeth a moment later as another contraction struck.

Recalling what the books had described on childbirth, V spoke once more, “I’m going to have you start pushing when you start to feel another contraction. It will be over soon, love, I promise…” He reassured her.

Evey barely managed a nod, her head resting back on the large mound of pillows V had gathered for her. V gave a quick glance to the supplies gathered on the bedside table beside him to make sure he hadn’t forgotten any supplies:  A bulb syringe, fresh towels and wash cloths, a cord clamp, a small basin filled with warm water, scissors, small blankets, a small white beanie and a nappy. Perfect.

Taking a deep breath, V positioned his waiting hands in front of Evey’s opening. He glanced up at his wife to see if any progress was being made.

Evey’s white teeth still remained clamped down on each other, yet she’d somehow managed to prop herself up. Both hands tightly gripped the sheets, and a loud grunt escaped her lips. He quickly looked back down to the opening, hoping to see some sign of the child.

Without even being given instructions, Evey let out a soft scream and focused all of her energy and effort on the muscles of her abdomen as the next contraction struck.  Upon directing his eyes downward, V saw what unmistakably must have been a head. It was black, with a few splotches of red.

“The head’s coming!” he declared, “Just a few more, darling!” Evey nodded, squeezing her eyes shut and bending her head down. The lady gathered what remaining strength she harbored, more determined than ever to finish this endeavor.  With a grunt that quickly climbed to a scream, Evey gave one final push.

The infant slipped from its mother’s womb, and its father quickly reached his white gloved hands out and caught the slippery creature. Along with it came a hideous black blob, soaked with bright red blood. Sticking out of it was a yellowish tube that lead to the baby’s belly button. Had he not done so much extensive reading, V might have believed that Evey had somehow pushed out one of her organs.

The newborn let out a soft cough, and suddenly began to wail at the top of its little lungs, makings its newfound presence known throughout the whole Gallery. V felt a smile tug at the corners of his lips, and it wasn’t long before he was grinning widely. “Hello there…” He said, reaching over for the towel and the bulb.

Evey lay in a shuddering heap from her experience, the muscles of her lower half giving off a sore and tender feeling. The sound their baby, her baby, crying pierced her ears. A more than welcome sound. Despite the aching sensation in her abdomen, Evey hastily sat up to get a better look at what her and her lover had created.

V was carefully rubbing the infant off with a pure white towel, its umbilical cord cut and the placenta resting in the basin. Evey watched with a look of impatience in her brown eyes as V extracted fluid from the child’s mouth and nose with the syringe before placing the beanie atop its  fuzzy cranium and swaddling it in a white blanket, handing it off into Evey’s anxiously waiting arms.

She didn’t even hear V exit the room with the placenta. At this moment in time, all she could devote attention to was the small bundle that she was finally able to hold.

The baby that lay within the bundle of white made a sniffling noise and latched on to Evey’s white garments. She pulled back the front of the soft fabric a bit to get a better look at her newborn. Its eyes strained at the lights, despite how dimmed they were. Upon pulling the beanie back, Evey found the child’s damp hair was jet black.

A soft smile spread across her tear stained face, “Hello there…” She pressed their foreheads together and kissed the baby’s nose, “Didn’t want to come out, did you? Quite the fight you put up.” Evey nuzzled her newborn’s face, a stinging feeling rising in her eyes once more.

Her voice cracked a bit as she said this and she instantly found herself crying out of happiness. The young lady gently hugged her baby to her chest and kissed its head repeatedly.

“It’s a girl.” Evey looked up from the baby to see her husband re-entering the room, his white gloves replaced with his standard black ones. “G-Girl?” Evey stuttered, still crying a bit. “Yes, girl.” He repeated himself, walking over to the chair that was beside the bed and taking a seat.

Girl. Their baby was a girl… They had a daughter.

V encircled his beloved in an embrace, mindful of the baby in her arms. “You did wonderfully, my dear… Absolutely wonderfully…” Evey grinned at his compliment, returning her glance to their daughter.

She was staring up into the smiling mask of her father, studying it with her eyes that were not all the way open just yet. With a light chuckle, Evey said to the girl, “Does someone want daddy?”.

Evey felt V tense up as she said this. “Evey love, you’ve barely held her for five minutes… Wouldn’t it be best if you held her a bit longer?” he asked, a of hint nervousness in his tone. Her grin shaped into a smirk at this, “Are you honestly scared to hold her? You can handle bombs but you can’t handle a baby?” she asked.

V felt his cheeks warm up, “Of course I can… I just, um…” Evey grinned a bit wider, slinking out of his arms. “’Um’ Nothing, V.” She held the child out to him, observing in amusement as he carefully took her in his arms to cradle her as if she were made of the finest china.

For a brief moment the child began making a noise that was a mix of a mewl and cry, and V’s first thought was ‘Marvelous. She’s no more than a few minutes old and already she despises you.’ But nonetheless he brought her to his chest, her small head resting directly over his heart. The beat of his heart, which was so similar to her mother’s in the way that it seemed to make a soothing melody for her, immediately silenced her.

V locked eyes with his newborn. They were a rich chocolate brown, exactly like her mother’s. “She has your eyes…” he said quietly, stroking her pudgy, rosy cheek. The new sound of his voice caught her attention, and she turned it toward him in response.

He hadn’t expected that. Did… Did that mean she recognized him? “Hello…” she blinked quietly in acknowledgement, “Yes, it’s me… I’m daddy…” She clung to the fabric of his top and rubbed her head against it. “Does that mean she recognizes me, darling? Does she know who I am?” he questioned, feeling a mixture of emotions. She met eyes with him once more, her head staying put.

She looked just like Evey… Her soft, pale skin, her beautiful eyes… Just like his Evey.

“Beautiful…” V whispered, carefully bringing his face down to nuzzle hers. “Isn’t she lovely?” Evey asked, beaming with pride. “I love her… She’s perfect.” He responded, his eyes beginning to sting. “You’re perfect…” he told his daughter.

“Dear, you’re crying!” Evey said, taking notice of the drops of moisture falling from under V’s mask and landing on their daughter’s blanket.

Ignoring her words, V looked up, “We have to give her a name. Have you any suggestions?” he asked.

In the midst of all that had happened, Evey had completely forgotten about names. Even so, she did recall a few she had conjured up. “Well… I did have an idea of what her middle name could be…” V nodded, “Go on.”.

“Valerie. I want her middle name to be Valerie.”

V wasn’t too surprised. He himself had considered Valerie for a name at one point. Glancing back down to the bundle, he studied her for a moment. “I think Valerie would suit her rather nicely…” he said, smiling behind the mask.

“Would you like to choose her first name?” Evey asked.

“Hmm. I haven’t got that many… Anna?”

“Too common.”

“What about Elsa?”

Evey smirked, as if the name were laughable.

“No? Alright then…”

He directed his view back down to the unnamed girl, trying to think of something fitting for such a lovely child. God, she looked so much like Evey… What was a name that sounded even slightly like Evey? He pondered over this momentarily, before it came to him.

“Evangeline?”

Evey thought it over, and then began smiling. “Evangeline Valerie Hammond. I don’t believe she could ask for a better name.”

The newly dubbed Evangeline began to nod off, her eyes threatening to fall shut. V smiled, “It would seem that someone is tired.” Evey nodded, letting out a yawn, “That would make two of us then…”

He passed Evangeline back to Evey, who lay back on the pillows. “I think we all could use a little rest. That includes you, V.” V didn’t object. He slipped his boots off and stepped into the bed to lie beside his family. He wrapped his arms around Evey’s petite shoulders, hugging her close but remembering to leave space for Evangeline to breathe.
In all of the years he could remember, V had never for a moment pictured he would be where he was now. He would have never considered that one day he would be the father of a wonderful little girl, whom he scarcely believed was actually his. She was so perfect and fragile. So unlike what he was. And then there was Evey. Sweet, sweet Evey. It was amazing how she managed to put up with his antics, how loving and caring she was.

He didn’t deserve either of them in the slightest. But here they were. His two ladies. At that moment, with the two of them snuggled against him, everything in the world felt perfect.

He wouldn’t dare change it.

Just as Evey closed her eyes, V asked “Dearest?”

“Hmm?”

“How soon do you think it will be before she’ll be able to wield a sword?”.
